Welcome to the SFCCL Ryder Cup I
The SFCCL Ryder Cup, named after the international golf competition between the United States and Europe, is an thrice-annual international tournament to crown the "Grand Champion of the SFCCL". An 8-fighter team from the Americas divisions and an 8-fighter team from the European divisions face off in a single elimination tournament. The winning region's team earns the title of "Grand Champion" for their highest division champion until the next Ryder Cup competition. The event was born from the season two week four split of European division. The members of the SFCCL still wanted to have international matches, but due to the time zone and possible lag issues, the matches would be limited throughout the season. Thus, the creation of the Ryder Cup, an international event with higher stakes than ever before.
The top 4 fighters of the Gold and Red divisions serve as Captains for their team, the Americas Team & the European Team respectively. Each Captain will then invite an additional fighter from their region's SFCCL rankings to fill out the 8-fighter teams from each region. The highest ranked fighter from each team would play the lowest ranked fighter from the opposite team each round. A point is awarded for each victory. Once a fighter is defeated, they are eliminated from the Ryder Cup tournament. When a team earns 8 points (a point for each fighter defeated), they will win the Ryder Cup & take the title of "Grand Champion" back to their highest division champion. All SFCCL matches are best 2 out of 3 five-round sets.
In the event of uneven teams after the first round, the winning team (team with most points) may have fighters receiving a bye until the next round. The matches will then have the losing team's highest ranked fighter versus the lowest ranked fighter from the winning team. The highest ranked fighters from the winning team will have to wait to play in these higher rounds. If the team's are even in following rounds, all fighters will have a match. The losing team will be forced to fight from the bottom up among the opposing team's ranked fighters.
During the opening week of the Ryder Cup, all involved fighters will be exempt from their weekly matches. This is done to unburden the involved fighters from having to play their weekly ranked match in addition to possibly many Ryder Cup matches. Hopefully, the majority of the Ryder Cup matches can be played during this two week layoff. Each fighter will retain their ranking for the following week, and not move up nor down in the rankings for the first week of competition. All Ryder Cup wins & losses will be recorded as part of a fighter's season record. Weekly ranked matches will resume the following week for the involved fighters even if the Ryder Cup competition is ongoing.
The qualifying matches to determine the Top 4 fighters in each region will begin the week prior to the start of the Ryder Cup tournament. Below is the schedule of Ryder Cup tournaments for season 2:
Week 9 (October 18, 2010) - qualifying matches in Week 8
Week 16 (January 31, 2011) - qualifying matches in Week 15
